SAGA North Gallery Uploads

The SAGA North Gallery works very well with uploading jpg image files. Those are good because they can usually be compressed. By default photos are limited to 1.28MB for each one (though it might be possible to raise that limit for a particular photo album.) We suggest using a program like Photoshop to increase the compression of photos before uploading them, if they are larger than 1.28MB. While some of the upload methods can reduce the size of photos while uploading them, you have more control if you do it before hand.

It is great to upload with the original resolution of photos, because that makes it possible for others to get prints of the photos. The SAGA Gallery will display images with reduced resolution unless the person wants to see or print the original. Information provided by the camera can be displayed, so try to keep that info with the photo if you use a program like Photoshop. That's another reason to use jpg files.

The SAGA North Gallery has several methods to add photos to your photo album.

  • Web Browser. This method is easy to start with, but it has some limitations. We suggest that you only upload one photo at a time, and the maximum size for a single photo is 5 MB. It's better if the photos are compressed to 1.28Mb before uploading. You can upload zip files that contain multiple photos, as long as the size of the zip file is under 5 MB. The Gallery will automatically unpack the zip file.

If you get a message complaining that you don't have "jptran" installed, that is because you tried to have the photo sizes reduced before uploading. This feature is only available when you install Gallery Remote. Click through these messages and continue the upload anyway.

  • Upload Applet. This is one of our favorites. Like the Web Browser method, it should work on just about any computer and browser that supports Java Applets. You can upload entire directories at a time. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work with archive (.zip) files.

You can get the same message about "jptran" when using this upload method too.

  • Gallery Remote. Ultimately, this is the best way of all. You can upload any number of photos at once and navigate between photo albums. You can also upload archive files. It can also reduce the size of the photos before transmitting them, to save time. (However, it seems to go to extremes at reducing the photos, so you might want to reduce them more gently before hand with something like Photoshop.) The default size limit is 1.28MB

The only real disadvantage is that you must download the Java program, install it on you computer, and configure it with your SAGA North Gallery account. But once that is done, it is very easy to operate.

  • Windows XP This also requires a download, but is easy to use for one photo at a time. We haven't tried zip files so it's not certain that will work.

  • There are several other methods listed when you select the "add items" link in the Gallery. However, we recommend that you use one of these. If your photos are easily accessible on another web site (the full resolution photos, not just the thumbnails) you could try that method to avoid uploading them again. But that usually gets tricky to make it work.
